When I hold your hand. When I hold your hand, it isn’t because mine is cold and I’m hoping to steal some of your warmth. It isn’t something to do because I like to fidget with things. It isn’t me hoping you’ll lead the way. It isn’t because I’m afraid either. When I hold your hand, it’s because at that moment in time, you are me and I am you. I care about your well being, your safety, and your comfort as much as I do mine, perhaps more. Me holding your hand is my assurance to you that we are connected and I feel you. It’s my quiet way of saying, “we’re in this together.” At that moment, my heart contains your best interest. All else is trivial. So if ever I grab your hand, please, for your sake and mine, don’t let go. There’s nothing to think about. There’s nothing to question. For that second, minute, hour, or day, you are me and I am you. You are safe. You are loved. You are cared for. Ok?
